Overview

In rural Haryana, thousands of students lack access to quality educational resources beyond the
classroom. The Children Library Program, launched by Tapas Foundation in collaboration with KAI
India, seeks to bridge this learning gap by creating engaging, book-rich environments within
government schools.
The campaign kicked off with the setup of a dedicated library at GSSS Islampur School, Gurugram,
Haryana — transforming an empty classroom into a vibrant space filled with curated books across
reading levels. The initiative aims to foster reading habits, spark imagination, and provide equal
opportunities to students through accessible, informal learning.

Why It Matters

Despite rising literacy rates, many rural schools continue to operate with limited infrastructure and
almost no access to books outside prescribed textbooks. This limits students’ exposure, curiosity, and
independent learning.
By introducing a physical library space, the Children Library Program helps children:
– Explore stories and knowledge beyond textbooks
– Build a culture of reading and critical thinking
– Engage with education in a creative and self-led manner
This initiative supports foundational learning, helping students dream bigger and grow with
confidence.

Activities and Engagement

The campaign was launched with high student participation and active engagement from educators
and stakeholders.
Key highlights include:
Reading sessions led by volunteers to encourage storytelling and imagination
Interactions with students around their reading interests and dreams
– Endorsements from the school principal and KAI India’s Managing Director, Mr. Rajesh U. Pandya, recognizing the role of reading in lifelong learning
– Student involvement in library use and upkeep, fostering ownership

Impact

– Fully functional library created within the school
– Dozens of accessible books introduced
– Increased student participation in reading activities
– Visible excitement among learners for new knowledge
– Positive feedback from teachers on student enthusiasm
The voices of students and educators have already shown how much a well-designed space can
change the educational experience.
